History of Darjeeling: India’s Famous Tea Region

Darjeeling as Part of the State of Sikkim
The history of the Darjeeling region began when it was part of the Kingdom of Sikkim. Sikkim was founded by Tibetan people in the 17th century and existed as a small Himalayan kingdom between Nepal and Bhutan for nearly three centuries. This region, surrounded by mountainous terrain, was home to a unique cultural and natural environment.
British Development and the Beginning of Tea Cultivation
In the 19th century, the British expanded their colonial control in the Indian subcontinent and extended their influence over Sikkim, which became a British protectorate. The cool climate of Darjeeling made it an ideal hill station for the British to escape the intense heat of the Indian plains, and rapid development began. In addition to summer retreats, the British also initiated tea cultivation in the region.
Tea cultivation in Darjeeling was pioneered by Dr. Campbell, who was the superintendent of Darjeeling at the time. He experimented with planting tea, and its success ensured the birth of Darjeeling tea. Known for its distinctive aroma and flavor, Darjeeling tea soon earned the title of ”Champagne of teas” and became highly regarded worldwide.
Integration into India and Modern-Day Darjeeling
In 1947, India gained independence from British rule, and Sikkim became a protected state of India, eventually being officially integrated into the country in 1975. After this integration, Darjeeling became a city within the state of West Bengal.
Through this historical journey, Darjeeling has developed into a world-renowned tea-producing region.
