As we have explained, there are several types of barley tea. Since I started writing about barley tea, I’ve found it so enjoyable that I’m writing a second article on the topic.

Now, are you familiar with whole grain barley tea? It’s the kind sold in bags filled with whole barley grains, rather than tea bags. Many people might know of its existence but haven’t bought it because it seems complicated to prepare. In this article, I will introduce how to make truly delicious barley tea using whole grain barley.

Before explaining the brewing method, let me briefly describe the differences between tea bags and whole grain barley tea.

Whole grain barley tea needs to be brewed with hot water, as it cannot be brewed with cold water. On the other hand, tea bags are designed to be easily extracted by grinding the barley grains, making it possible to brew with cold water. Tea bags are convenient when you need to make tea quickly!

However, if you want to enjoy a more authentic flavor of barley tea, whole grain barley tea is recommended, even though it requires a bit more effort.

How to Brew Delicious Whole Grain Barley Tea:

  1. Boil 1.5 liters of water and add 30g to 50g of whole grain barley tea.
  2. Turn off the heat once it boils.
  3. Let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Strain it with a sieve or cloth and transfer it to a pitcher or container.

Additionally, for an extra step, to enhance the aroma, you can dry-roast the barley in a frying pan before use. You can also adjust the brewing time to your preference, but be careful not to over-brew it, as it may become bitter.

Barley tea made this way has a wonderful aroma and is delicious even when served warm.

Just as some people find it so delicious to cook rice in a clay pot that they can no longer go back to using a rice cooker, many people who switch to whole grain barley tea find it so tasty that they no longer use tea bags. Give it a try!
