The Story of Tea Tourism

Tea is produced all over Japan, regardless of scale. In this line of work, I often feel that tea takes me to various places across the country, as I get to visit many regions thanks to tea. In this article, I will talk a little about tea tourism.

Tea tourism refers to travel motivated by tea itself or the culture surrounding tea. Even before the term “tea tourism” was coined, tea enthusiasts and those involved in the tea industry were naturally engaging in tea tourism with deep purposes, such as discovering new teas, meeting producers, or tasting tea made with local water. However, this was a pleasure enjoyed by only a limited number of people. Now, tea-producing regions are coming together to create experiences and promote tea tourism to a broader audience.

Contacting a tea farmer to ask, “Can I visit? I’d like to help out,” can be quite daunting. In the past, such courage and enthusiasm were often necessary to visit and hear about tea or experience local tea. It’s very encouraging to see that the opportunities for tea tourism are gradually expanding. (There are websites that provide information on what experiences are available and when, with application windows to ensure a smooth process.)

Here’s an example of how access is expanding:
A friend who had said they never had the chance to drink tea was so impressed by the tea they had at a tea terrace in Shizuoka, which they visited because of its reputed scenery, that they started drinking tea occasionally. The application process seemed relatively easy. It’s wonderful that it’s not just a fleeting Instagram moment but something that makes an impact on their daily life.

It may be true for anything, but you never know what might spark someone’s interest. So, it’s better to have as many hooks as possible if you want someone to develop a liking for something. Although our approach is different, at teplo, we hope to create opportunities for people to appreciate delicious tea through the hook of technology and tea.
